Introduction

SpareBrains is an organizational program that allows you to organize and manage your information in Pages. There are 17 different page types, each having to do with a specific type of information. As you add pages, they are added to the page list on the first visible page of SpareBrains. You can then select a page you have added and fill it with appropriate information. All of the pages are stored together in one data file, so you can transfer it between your desktop PC and your portable.

The Main Page

This is the main window for SpareBrains. The large window to the left is the Page List, where all of your pages are displayed. Your pages are also displayed in the tab list across the top (or bottom) of SpareBrains. To go to a page, you can double-tap its name in the page list or tap its tab in the tab list. Use the arrow buttons to scroll the tabs.

The OK button returns you to the main SpareBrains page, no matter what page you are on. The Exit button (and the X button on some versions of Windows CE) will cause SpareBrains to exit, automatically saving your data file in the process. Please Note: Always use the X button or the Exit button to exit SpareBrains, and not the "Running Programs" dialogs in the Control Panel. The "Running Programs" dialog can be too impatient to close SpareBrains, not allowing it to save its data file and causing your data to be corrupted.

Use the Add Page and Insert Page buttons to add or insert pages in the list. The Add Page button adds a new page to the end of the list, and the Insert Page button inserts a new page before the currently selected page. When you use Add Page or Insert Page, the New Page Dialog will be displayed, allowing you to select the type and name of the new page.

Once a page has been added, Use the Edit Page button to edit the name of the selected page, and use the Delete Page button to delete the selected page and all of its data.

When a page is selected in the Page List, its page type will be displayed next to Type: near the bottom of the screen. You can also tell what kind of page it is by the icon in the tab list. Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to move the selected page up or down in the list. Use the Hide Page checkbox to hide the selected page in the tab list (it will still appear in the Page List). The topmost page, "SpareBrains!", is the main SpareBrains page and cannot be moved, hidden, or deleted.

The To Gallery... button allows you to send the currently selected page to the Gallery, a separate data file where you can store and recall frequently used or useful pages. For more on using the Gallery, see the Using the Gallery page. The Settings button gives you access to the Settings Dialog, discussed in the next section, and the About button displays information about SpareBrains.

The Settings Dialog

The Settings Dialog allows access to various SpareBrains settings. It is accessed by tapping the "Settings" button on the SpareBrains main page. The four buttons under the Data label are for selecting and saving the main data file that SpareBrains uses. Tap New to create a new, empty data file or Load... to browse for an existing data file. Tap Save to save the current data file under its existing name, or Save As... to save the current data file under a new name. SpareBrains data files are typically located in the "My Documents" folder and have the extension ".spb". Note that SpareBrains saves your data file automatically when you exit, but it is a good idea to manually save every so often in case your machine crashes or locks up.

The two buttons under the Gallery label are for creating and selecting SpareBrains Gallery files. Use the New... button to create (and select) a new gallery file, and use the Select... button to select an existing gallery file. SpareBrains Gallery files are also typically located in the "My Documents" folder but have the extension ".spg". Note that you never have to save a Gallery file - it is saved automatically whenever you add to, delete from, or sort the Gallery.

The Create backup (".bak") files option specifies whether SpareBrains should create backup files whenever the data files are saved. It is recommended to leave this checked, as this can allow you to recover the last saved copy of your data files if your machine crashes during a save. The Autosave on Exit option specifies whether or not SpareBrains will automatically save your data file on exiting SpareBrains. It is also recommended to leave this checked. The final option, Disable Page Backgrounds, specifies whether or not the colorful page backgrounds should be displayed in the dialogs. This is unchecked by default, but If you find the page backgrounds distracting, check this box for plain backgrounds.

The Gallery Dialog

The Gallery Dialog is accessed by pressing the From Gallery... button in the New Page Dialog, itself reached by tapping Add Page or Insert Page. For more information on using the Gallery, see the Using the Gallery page.

The large window in the left side of the Gallery Dialog is the Gallery Page List. This lists all of the pages that are currently in your Gallery. When a page is selected, its type will appear next to the Page Type: tag at the bottom of the list. Use the Load button to load the selected page to your current SpareBrains page list. Use the Delete button to deleted the selected page and its data from the Gallery. Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to move the selected page up and down in the list. Finally, if you have removed pages from the list and you want to make the gallery file as small as possible, tap the Compact button.

General Page Types

Many of the page types in SpareBrains work in the same way: the page provides a template for information, you fill in the page fields, and you can then access the information quickly and easily. The following are general page types:
  • Attraction
  • Contact
  • Cruise
  • Excursion
  • Flight
  • Lodging
  • Medical
  • Notes
  • Rental Car
  • Train

All of these page types have labels identifying what to put in the fields. All fields are optional - fill in as much or as little as you wish. All of these pages except the Notes page are scrollable (the text in the Notes page is scrollable by itself), so depending on the size of your machine, you may need to use the scroll bar to get to the fields at the bottom of the page. However, the most important fields are typically grouped at the top.

The Conversion Page

The Conversion Page is one of the most powerful features of SpareBrains but can also be a little confusing at first.

There are many "preset" conversions that you can use. For example, by selecting "Distance" for the category and "Miles to Kilometers" for the item, the conversion page sets up to do this calculation for you. The conversion is described in the center of the dialog with the caption "1 Mile equals 1.61 Kilometers". You can then use the number pad at the left to enter a number (which appears in the field labelled "Miles") and press Convert to see the result in the field labelled "Kilometers".

You can also set up to do the opposite calculation, Miles to Kilometers, by simply pressing the Reverse button. Now the conversion description is "1 Kilometer equals 0.62 Miles". You can then use the number pad at the left to enter a number (which appears in the field now labelled "Kilometers") and press Convert to see the result in the field labelled "Miles".

However, there are so many potential conversions that it would be impossible to have them all as presets. This is where the "Custom" category fits in. The Custom category allows you to define a conversion that is useful to you. Selecting the "Custom" category brings up the Conversion Item Setup Dialog.

For an example, you can create a conversion page that converts from French Francs to US Dollars. Enter the "singular" forms, "plural" forms, typical decimal places, and the rate of "to" items per "from" item. For our example, our "from" item is Francs and our "to" item is Dollars, so the rate is expressed in Francs per Dollar. When you are finished, tap <>OK to start using this conversion. Now you can enter an amount in Francs, tap Convert, and see the equivalent in Dollars below.

The Expense, Financial, and List Pages

The Expense, Financial, and List pages are for keeping track of lists of items. The main area of these pages is the list that contains the current items. On all of these pages, you can tap Add to add an item, Edit to edit the currently selected item, Delete to delete the currently selected item, and Move Up or Move Down to reposition the currently selected item in the list.

The Sketch Page

The Sketch Page is used to draw free-form notes, maps, diagrams - basically anything that would be helpful for your trip. You can change colors, draw thick or thin lines, erase, and use either free-form sketching or straight lines. To make a straight line, tap the Line option, and tap where you want both endpoints. You can also undo the last action by tapping the Undo button.

The Viewer Page

The Viewer Page is used to view bitmap (.BMP) files for useful reference information or just to spice up your itinerary. To add a BMP image to our SpareBrains data file, it needs to be on the machine we are working on. If you are creating your data file on your mobile device, you need to transfer the BMP image file to your mobile device's "My Documents" folder using the browser window on your desktop PC. You can then tap the "Browse" button in the Viewer Page to select the image.

Once a BMP image is selected in this way, it becomes a part of the current SpareBrains data file (you don't need the .BMP file). You can also choose "Fit" to fit the entire picture in the frame or uncheck "Fit" to view the image at actual size with scrollbars. The "Aspect" checkbox specifies whether to maintain the aspect ratio (horizontal and vertical proportion) in Fit mode.
